In the middle, you'll see the skinniest building in Amsterdam. Back when these buildings where made, you paid taxes based on the width of your place. Staircases are very narrow to take advantage of the most living space possible. That's why on most buildings you'll see a pulley system (like the one on top) to allow people to lift furniture in from the outside.
